Here are some ideas for how you can structure both live and non-live online classes...
3:00- Lesson Begins with T. emailing or posting the text and comprehension questions. Ss. are expected to read the text and write their answers before joining the live class. T. might assign pre-work focusing on vocabulary as well.
3:30- Live discussion begins. T. might ask Ss. to read the text aloud in pieces. T. might ask Ss. to go into breakout rooms and discuss their answers to particular discussion questions.
3:45- Break (Ss. turn off their webcams, stand up, get a drink, come back in 3-5 min).
3:50- T. resumes class and calls on Ss. or groups to report their answers or what they discussed. T finishes with a post-reading activity, sends out a model (finish the story, guess what happens next, write a response letter…). Ss. ask questions about assignment if needed.
4:10- Next meeting is clarified and meeting is ended.
3:00- Lesson starts. T. will email or post the reading for the day with questions. Ss. will read the text and pick out words that are unfamiliar to them.
3-4pm- Ss. are expected to choose three vocabulary words they find themselves unfamiliar with and post on a shared classroom chat or board or Facebook group with the word, definition, and other example sentence.
Before 5pm- T. expects that all Ss. have posted on the board. Ss. will be expected to write and privately respond with their answers to comprehension questions.
